DAP Survey Overview

Background

Dallas ISD has administered the Developmental Assets Profile (DAP) to grades 6-12 since spring 2010. DAP is a 58-item survey from the Search Institute in Minneapolis, MN, that asks students to assess their social and psychological well-being in terms of a series of research-based characteristics, or developmental assets, identified as essential to success in school and healthy personal development. The results summarize these assets across eight asset categories and five context areas. The categories consist of external and internal assets. External assets are positive experiences and relationships that young people receive from peers, parents, teachers, and other adults. Internal assets are behaviors that reflect positive personal development. The external categories are support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, and constructive use of time. The internal categories are commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and positive identity. In addition, the DAP also groups student responses to the 58 survey items across five context areas: personal, social, family, school, and community.

Scoring

Scoring of the DAP produces scale scores ranging from zero to 30 for each asset category and context area. The score ranges are as follows:

0-14 Low - Students with low levels of developmental assets may be at greater risk of academic failure, substance abuse, antisocial behavior, and other negative outcomes, presenting an opportunity for intensive intervention aimed at improving developmental assets.
15-20 Fair - Scores in this range raise concerns about low asset levels in a young person?s life, indicating a need for interventions to build assets.
21-25 Good - Scores in this range indicate strong levels of assets overall, but with some room for improvement.
26-30 Excellent - Scores in this range represent high levels of developmental assets, associated with positive academic, social and emotional outcomes.
